At What Age Should My Child See a Dentist in Moscow, ID?

The American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry both put it the same way: a child should see a dentist within six months of the first tooth appearing, and no later than the first birthday. For most Moscow families that means somewhere between nine and twelve months old, which usually lands well before anyone was planning on it.
The reason is simple and slightly unwelcome. A tooth can begin to decay from the moment it comes in, and decay in a very young child moves faster than most parents expect. Seeing a dentist early is not about finding problems at age one. It is about not finding them at age three.

What Actually Happens at a First Visit
Almost nothing that a parent worries about. There is no drill, no needle, and at that age usually no x-rays. Most first visits take less time than the drive over from Moscow.

The other reason to come early has nothing to do with teeth. A child who first meets a dentist at age one, with nothing wrong and nothing hurting, learns that this is a boring, ordinary place. A child whose first visit happens at age five because something hurts learns something very different, and it can take years to undo.

Permanent Molars and Sealants
The first permanent molars arrive around age six with deep grooves a toothbrush cannot reach. This is the prime window for sealants, and around age seven is when crowding first becomes worth assessing.
10–14 yrs
Alignment and Sports
The years when braces or clear aligners usually come up, and when a custom mouthguard starts earning its keep in school sports.
16–19 yrs
Wisdom Teeth
The last set shows up in the late teens. We evaluate them here and, in most cases, remove them here too, without a referral out of the region.

A tooth can start decaying the moment it comes in, so the first visit is mostly about prevention and habits: bottles at bedtime, sippy cup use, how to brush a toddler who does not want to be brushed, and whether your child needs extra fluoride. It also means your child meets a dentist before anything hurts.
It is short and low key. Often the child sits on a parent's lap while we count teeth, check how the bite is developing, and look for early signs of decay. There is no drilling and usually no x-rays at that age. Most of the appointment is a conversation with you.
