What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
A plain-language guide for Pullman and Lewiston patients: what needs same-day care, what can wait, and what to do first.

A dental emergency is any problem that needs prompt care to stop bleeding, ease severe pain, save a tooth, or treat an infection. Knocked-out or broken teeth, severe toothaches, swelling in the jaw or gums, and lost crowns or fillings that hurt all count.
Plenty of things do not. A tiny chip with no pain, mild sensitivity, or a filling that popped out but does not hurt can usually wait for a regular visit — though they still deserve attention before they get worse. Six Problems That Need Same-Day Care
If any of these are happening, treat it as an emergency and call us — not the ER, which can manage pain but cannot fix a tooth. Both offices hold same-day slots.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Hold it by the crown, keep it in milk, and call now. Seeing us within the hour gives the best chance of saving it.
Cracked or Broken Tooth With Pain
Rinse with warm water, save any pieces, and cover a sharp edge with dental wax. We repair most the same day.
Severe or Throbbing Toothache
Often a crack or infection. Rinse, floss gently to clear debris, and call. Do not push through it for days.
Swelling in the Jaw or Gums
A clear sign of infection. This should not wait, and in some cases needs urgent attention.
Lost Crown or Filling That Hurts
The tooth underneath is exposed and can break down fast. If it hurts or has a sharp edge, call the same day.
Bleeding That Will Not Stop
Apply gentle pressure with clean gauze. If bleeding is heavy and will not slow, call us or seek urgent care.
What to Do Before You Get to Us
Rinse gently with warm salt water to clean the area. Floss carefully to remove anything trapped, but skip sharp tools. Use an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed, and never place aspirin directly on the gum. For swelling, hold a cold compress to the outside of your cheek. For a knocked-out tooth, keep it moist in milk and get to us fast. Then call the office closest to you and tell us you are on the way.

A small chip with no pain, a lost filling that does not hurt, mild sensitivity, or a dull ache that comes and goes can usually wait for a regular appointment. They still deserve attention soon, but they do not require same-day care. If it worsens or starts to hurt, call us.
For almost every tooth problem, call a dentist first. Hospital emergency rooms can manage pain and treat serious infections or facial trauma, but they cannot repair or replace a tooth. Go to the ER for uncontrolled bleeding, trouble breathing or swallowing, or a jaw injury, and see us for the tooth itself.
Pick it up by the crown, not the root, and gently rinse it if it is dirty. If you can, place it back in the socket, or keep it in milk. Then call us immediately. The sooner we see you, ideally within an hour, the better the chance of saving the tooth.
