Typically, filling a cavity will take about an hour at the dentist. While most fillings can be done in one appointment, larger or multiple fillings may require a second visit.
How Long Does It Take To Get A Filling?
The average time a filling takes is one hour. However, a simple filling could take as few as 20 minutes. Modern dental offices feature the technology to make onlays and inlays in one appointment. Larger or multiple fillings may take longer, of course.
Here are a few reasons why a filling may take more than an hour:
- Composite resin material layered into our teeth will take a bit more time. It should be completed in one visit, though.
- Some composite fillings will be made from an impression, which calls for a second appointment.
- Gold or porcelain fillings can be completed in one appointment. If your dentist does not have the proper equipment, though, you’ll likely need a second visit.
Replacing an older filling will usually take the same amount of time as the original filling. Your dentist will clean out your cavity and old material, then apply the new filling material.
What Are The Different Types Of Fillings?
Your dentist will undoubtedly discuss the various materials that can be utilized to fill a cavity. According to the American Dental Association, these are some of the most common materials used for fillings:
- Silver-color fillings: These are metal amalgams, which is a combination of tin, silver, and copper. This material is more durable than other tooth-color fillings and typically more affordable. However, these fillings are being phased out due to their mercury content.
- White-color fillings: These are a combination of glass or quartz particles and acrylic resin. This material is quite durable, but can be costly, as well.
- Gold fillings: This mix of gold, copper, and other metals is durable but more expensive. These are not natural looking, but usually are made in a lab after the dentist takes an impression of your teeth.
- Glass ionomer fillings: These tooth-colored fillings are not as strong as composites overall. These are often used for children’s teeth as they can help prevent cavities.
- Porcelain fillings: This cost is similar to gold fillings but appear more natural. They will be made in a lab once the dentist takes an impression of your tooth.
